Looking for your own little piece of heaven…that's our city…Lafayette, Louisiana!

  • Heart of Cajun Country
  • Population of City: 117,000 Lafayette Parish: 167,000
  • Home of UL of Lafayette…Home of the Rajun Cajuns- enrollment: 17,000

Story of Acadiana: The Acadians were forced out of Nova Scotia for religious purposes and settled in and around Lafayette and Southwestern Louisiana because of the rich soil and good fishing.

Mardi Gras: We have wonderful Mardi Gras, with several parades, many Krewes, and a fun safe place for families to enjoy the season.

Home of the Icegators: We have had an ice hockey team for the last 5 years, and they pack the fans into the Cajundome. They are a winning team and the "chomp" of the fans keep the dome full of life and the team in the playoffs!

There are two large Country Clubs, Oakbourne and Le Triomphe, that have beautiful golf courses, great tennis courts, beautiful club houses, swimming pools, dining and fun for the whole family.

There are two municipal golf courses that are full on the approximately 300 days of the year to play golf. North of Lafayette is another private golf course, Acadian hills…great golfing.

Dining is spectacular. There are so many fine restaurants for a city this size, it would amaze you! There are all types of foods offered, especially the many Cajun and seafood dishes…like you have never eaten anywhere before. This is Cajun country…the real thing!

We have the Acadiana Symphony that performs monthly with outstanding guest performers. Our fine arts are a very important part of our community and can compare with any larger city.

The Children's Museum is so unique. It is geared for the local culture and a pleasure for both young and old. It is clean, friendly, and something you must visit!

We are building a new Natural History Museum and Planetarium. We have had one for many years but have just broken ground, March 2000, for a new facility.

Within 40 minutes is great fishing or hunting. You can either go to the Gulf and Vermillion Bay area for saltwater fishing or to the many Bayous for good fresh water fishing. Of course, hunting is one of the favorite sports of the fall and winter. Geese and duck are plentiful…just find a buddy that knows where to go.

There are five hospitals with outstanding medical facilities. Lafayette is becoming a Medical Hub between New Orleans and Houston. You can stay in your own town and have award winning hospital and doctors at your fingertips.

For just a few tourist attractions: Acadian Village and Vermillion Ville had old homes and churches that have been brought in and set up to depict a village of the past. On any given day you can visit and hear Acadian music or join in the jois d fe…the fun and laughter than is part of the Cajun way.

Shopping is a big sport in Lafayette. With large malls and many boutiques, forget about going any place else to find the greatest buys and selections. Just ask any lady on the street where the mall is…she'll let you know in a flash!

Before I forget…there is a festival for just about anything…from the Boudin Festival to the Crawfish Festival…from the Arts and Crafts to the Food Fest…there is somewhere to go almost any weekend to have fun. In the spring until it gets too warm and again the fall until it gets too cold, on Friday night after work, Downtown Lafayette is closed off and there is dancing and eating in the streets at "Downtown Alive".
